Distractions work in our mind by triggering a response in our brain's reward center, the nucleus accumbens. The nucleus accumbens regulates the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is associated with feelings of pleasure and reward.

When we encounter a distraction, such as a notification on our phone or an interruption from a colleague, it triggers a dopamine release in our brain. This creates a feeling of pleasure and reward that can make it difficult to resist the distraction and stay focused on our task.

Additionally, distractions can activate the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions such as attention, decision-making, and working memory. When we are distracted, the prefrontal cortex has to divert its attention away from our task and towards the distraction, which can decrease performance and productivity.

Distractions work in our minds by triggering a release of dopamine and diverting our attention away from our task, which can impact our ability to focus and perform effectively.
